KATHARSIS II another circumnavigation hoax? ...or was this real proof of 15,000 mile Antarctic circumference?

1.0 -- KATHARSIS II MAKES EXTRAORDINARY CLAIM in 2018.
Here it is November of 2019 as I post this and yet an apparent circumnavigation along the lines I've been thinking ought to be done-- was completed around April 2018, a year and a half ago-- by a crew of eight on a sailboat called KATHARASIS II. Here is their route-- a little further south of 60S.

2.0-- NEW INVESTIGATION of CLAIM OF 15,000 MILE CIRCUMFERENCE at 65S
I'm going to open up an investigation into this claim, of course-- I must-- if only to continue this blog's point and purpose. The first problem I have here is that the claim KATHARSIS II is making-- that they completed the circumnavigation in about 3 months and that they travelled about 15,000 miles-- would definitively prove that Earth is indeed a spinning ball and not a pizza shaped flat disc-- at least by my own rules here in this blog. I'll leave aside considerations of a toroidal field in 4-D hyperspace for now. Here's a screenshot of their claim...

2.1-- Would any such claim satisfy me one way or another?
How would I judge the validity of the claim? My answer at the moment is that the test run would have to be repeatable-- as all experiments in science. And the test runs would have to reveal more technical data than is revealed in the online sources for the claims by KATHARSIS II.

3.0-- OTHER CLAIMANTS of CIRCUMFERENCE of 15,000 MI.
They claim that "no sailor in history has managed to circumnavigate Antarctica so close to the continent so fast". I would think that they might have mentioned the VENDEE RACES and another Australia based race organization as close seconds but they do not. See Vendee in my index below-- a race series that I've determined to be a possible hoax.

4.0-- OTHER INVESTIGATORS I'LL SUMMARIZE HERE on this point about the circumference.
Matt Boyland, Chippy.

5.0-- TRANSLATION OF POLISH TO ENGLISH on KATHARSIS II OFFICIAL WEBSITE
5.1 Babelfish?

6.0-- KATHARSIS II RELATED WEBSITES

7.0-- WEB PAGES COVERING KATHARSIS II

8.0-- SIZE OF THE SAILING YACHT PROBLEMS

8.1 The yacht looks too small and frail for this type of voyage-- to me.
8.2 The sailing yacht was subject to no-wind conditions and could not reliably do the trip.
8.3 The diary of the voyage indicates they were overturned and lost all the crew in the water at one point-- unbelievable.

9.0 MAP PROJECTION COMMENTARY
9.1 Why start in SA but end in Hobart? Why not start and stop in Kapztad SA?
9.2 Why go south of 60S?
9.3 How were they legally able to south of 60S?

10.0 Where did they get the idea to do this journey? (or fake it?) From my blog here? It almost seems to be so.
10.1 "Around the Ice" seems to be a direct attack on the idea that Earth is flat and that the ice is a wall surrounding Earth.
The expressions on the faces of the voyagers seem to be looking at me, personally, in a weird sort of way-- telling me that my blog here is pointless-- that they've proven the Earth is a flying ball in space because they sailed "around the ice." Special looks from these three sailors concern me... These three seem to be saying-- "What can you do now, Rick?... Nothing. B

11.0 The LOGO seems to be AMBIVALENT and an "in-your-face" affront to flat-earth thinkers.
Notice the perimeter of the logo-- almost a copy of the UN logo with the leaves representing the "ice wall". Here too, despite our seeing an "island" of Antarctica, it's surrounded by a possible symbolic "ice wall". A more generous interpretation would be "ocean waves". Is the ambivalence premeditated and intentional?

12.0 NAVIGATION screen shots indicate GPS positioning but what about NAVIGATION by STARS?
12.1 How would a trip around Antarctica be monitered by the crew, or by a third party? How were the trips monitered by the Vendee Races? How are ships tracked in the Antarctic region that go to the stations?
12.2 Is anyone using star charts anymore? Sextants?
12.3 How is distance measured in the water?
12.4 How can this trip by Katharsis II be INDEPENDENTLY verified? Is an award by a sailing organization enough? Should we verify the existence and legitimacy of the sailing organization?
12.5 Is this a repeatable trip-- on a more comfortable yacht? Would anyone be interested in doing it again... and again? Katharsis II says its the first to do it below 60S-- yet Antarctic research stations have been there for decades. My blog, here, proposed a round-Antarctica trip by stopping at each station. Is that possible?

13.0 My post to the KATHARSIS II website will attempt to solicit more data.

14.0 CONFLICTING centroid map routes raise PROBLEMS--
Discussion: I did not gather the source links-- just screen grabs. Will update with links to source.

15.0 GREEN SCREEN?
Discussion: The photo below looks like a green screened pose. There are no water droplets on the subject. The subject is not wearing gloves. Water drops and spray not apparent on any part of the boat. Gray sky would project a dimmer light on subject.

16.0 YACHTING WORLD covers KATHARSIS II Voyage in a shallow way. [Yachting World]
Discussion: One would think that a magazine that specializes in sailing would cover the Katharsis II trip in a somewhat technical manner, akin to Scientific American. Nope. Their coverage was shallow.

17.0 Easier route at 60S rather than Antarctica circumnavigation.
https://rickpotvinflatearth.blogspot.com/2017/03/easier-route-at-60s-rather-than.html

17.1 Circumnavigation below 60S should be less than 12,000 mi on a globe.
The 60th parallel south is a circle of latitude that is 60 degrees south of the Earth's equatorial plane. No land lies on the parallel — it crosses nothing but ocean.

The circumference of a globe at 0 should be about 40,000 km, they say. What is that in miles?
40000 km in miles - Google Search
24854.848 miles
Circle Sphere Earth Math Calculator

At 0 latitude, we have 24,901 miles.
At 60 lat., we have 12,482 miles.

17.2 REVIEW the RELEVENT DETAILS of the VENDEE RACE
Discussion: I covered the Vendee Races in some detail a few years ago. See Index below. I'll summarize them here for the purpose of this current post about Katharsis II here, soon.
Presentation - Vendée Globe 2016-2017
www.vendeeglobe.org/en/presentation

The Vendée Globe is still the only non-stop solo round the world race without ... to make a compromise between the shortest route, which is the furthest south, ...

17.3 Isn't travel south of 60S illegal according to Antarctica Treaty?
18.0 Are WINDSPEEDS are too high for sailboats below 60S?
Discussion: 60 degrees south is also a natural dividing line where the ocean and air currents circle the planet without any land to disrupt the flow.

19.0 FLAT EARTH SOCIETY POSTS from 2013 examined many of the issues covered here. I only recently either discovered or re-discovered that series of posts.

20.0 KATHARSIS II voyaged to ROSS SEA in 2015.
Discussion: See short video referred by anonymous commenter. The front of the sailboat seems to be hitting ice floes. How is this possible in a sailboat? I looked up the type of boat. It's manufactured by OYSTER YACHTS in England. They're out of business now so I'm unable to ask them if they recommend against sailing through ice. I could talk to other OYSTER YACHT owners and get their opinion. It doesn't seem likely, to me, that a crew would sail around or even to Antarctica in a yacht of this relatively small size compared to bigger ships that made the trip through history.

21.0 KATHARSIS II must have an ENGINE and FUEL-- to escape this DEAD AIR POSITION.
Discussion : It seems to me that if a "sailboat" that runs on "sails" and "wind" is sitting in what appears to be a bay surrounded by ICE -- that it MUST have engines to get going again. This is easy enough to double check since the sailboat was manufactured by OYSTER YACHTS of Southampton, England.

22.0 A "DAY BY DAY" CAPTAIN's LOG of such a voyage would not consist simply of candid shots of hugs, waves and t-shirts, and fabulous views.
Discussion: Were there no crises that warrented photos?  Where are the date stamps?  In the collection of photos below at the official website, https://antarcticcircle60s.pl/en/media-2/, we see no date and time stamps. An actual cruise like this should have date and time stamps on photos, no?

23.0 POLAND @SEA MAGAZINE would surely have reporters who can fact check.
Discussion: Where is the byline? Is this a real magazine?

QUOTE: Jan 01, 2018 · The Katharsis II yacht – a bumpy ride! Captain Mariusz Koper’s coverage of a sailing voyage comprising the circumnavigation of Antarctica, on the Katharsis II yacht. We have completed the first week of our sailing expedition, which has been very good so far. We are clocking in miles very fast.

QUOTE: The voyage of approximately 100 days through some of the world’s most difficult seas and oceans – comprises the circumnavigation of Antarctica, the coldest and least accessible continent on our planet. Mariusz Koper and his entirely Polish crew are planning to be the first to completely circumnavigate Antarctica south of the 60th parallel. This is an opportunity for a new sailing world record. The planned voyage will meet the requirements of the World Sailing Speed Record Council and those of Guinness World Records.

QUOTE: The current challenge – to circumnavigate Antarctica as close to the continent and within as short a time as possible – is a natural follow-up to Koper’s earlier accomplishments and experience. Until now, no sailing yacht has ever circumnavigated Antarctica in such proximity south of the 60th parallel.

27.0 COMMENTS on OFFICIAL KATHARSIS II WEBSITE REFER to FLAT EARTH
Discussion: What a coincidence that the commenter who said that Kartharsis II's voyage should end discussion of flat earth is in Arizona where I myself live! I'd be interested in meeting this "victor fernandez".  There are very few comments on the KII website-- so to find TWO COMMENTS that refer to putting an end to the flat earth theory by sailing around Antarctica, as I've proposed, is very interesting... although this entire scheme was apparently fully vetted on FES in 2013.. which I haven't fully reviewed.  I'm under my own impression that I came up with the idea independently. I don't recall reading FES and thinking that that was the best idea I've heard.

Is there any evidence that Kapitan Khlebnikov makes a full circumnavigation of Antarctica?

How do we know that it doesn't simply follow along the Antarctic coast for the requisite distance promised for the tour and then, once the tour is over, turns North to go home, its passengers thinking that they just "circumnavigated Antarctica"?

30.0 CUNARD OCEANLINERS claimed to have circumnavigated Antarctica frequently? Unlikely- rp
However, larger ships, such as the Cunard oceanliners, have circumnavigated Antarctica many times, taking about 5 weeks per trip.  There are cruise lines offering regular trips around Antarctic, with stops on some of the scenic spots, during the Southern Hemisphere's (oops!) summer.  Anyway, it's not like circumnavigating Antarctica was such a rarity, but doing it even once was sufficient proof that it doesn't surround the edge of the Earth.

42.0 PREVIOUS MISSIONS AROUND ANTARCTICA-- "above 60S" (how far above?)... by ALYE PARUSA 2008...

Proof it could be done
There was, on the other hand, a successful non-stop circumnavigation of Antarctica above the 60th parallel. The goal, accomplished by Fedor Konyukov aboard the 85ft Alye Parusa in 2008, has been recognised by The World Sailing Speed Record Council (WSSRC).

CONCLUSION on Nov. 26, 2019.
This blog entry has become a bit too bloated so I'm going to leave it here... and revamp the way I do articles.  I discovered another "page" maker on Blogger that I'll use in the future. I started using it today and it'll make my blog entries more efficient.

As far as Katharsis II goes, I think I've shown that there are some serious deficiencies with respect to their claim. And I've certainly come to the conclusion that's it's not safe to try this-- even if possible. Sailboats and ice floes don't below in the same area... especially sailboats with fibreglass hulls. I've yet to see a bigger metal hull yacht or small cruise ship or even an ice breaker try to do what Katharsis II claims. I haven't seen any passenger or other types of JETS try to go around at 60 either... which is now what I prefer to see-- and repeatedly and provably with third party confirmation by stars and visits to stop-locations.

Anyway, the whole thing is still indeterminate... Special thanks go to the commenters below and thanks too to the visitors to this post.

  1. hmm... Could you make a film and pass it off as a circumnavigation of Antarctica, with all the footage uploaded to social media, the odd latitude/longitude readout and tracking plots? I'd say you could. And then make a film about the film.... And four years ago at least, this crew allegedly travelled to almost 79S in the Ross Sea, the southernmost piece of ocean anywhere, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93Tu8qUGw50 Did they?

    1. Apparently , there is an agency that is confirming such claims but I'll have to drill down on that third party a bit to see what they said about that and who they really are. I'd say a group COULD fake this but my question is "why"? It's a pretty substantial fakery effort. On the other hand, maybe it's easy for certain factions to quickly throw up a website about a fake voyage with fake voyagers and a fake accomplishment. Certainly the lack of technical detail and "messy" photos as opposed to the "nice group photos" we see are indicaions of a problem. The account relating the capsizing of the Katharsis that i"ll post later is pretty unbelievalbe. And no photos of stars-- just like on the fake moon landing. No photos of the moon, and corresponding times etc. The whole account is thin. The video you pointed to is thin on evidence and more self congratulatory and promotionaly than technical... as if hoaxed. Again.. my question is more "why hoax this", more than 'is this a hoax" at this point. Their own website allows for commenters to post and two comments that stood out to me were about how this voyage puts to rest any flat earth theory. Is this hoax being run as possible psyop against flat earth? Or even my website-- in particular? Am I on their radar in this regard since I singularly am promoting a trip like this to determine flat or spherical world one way or another? The entire issue was discussed on FES forum back in 2013...so they could be responding, with this hoax, to all of us who propose such a trip-- not just me.

    2. I liked the immaculate uniforms they were all wearing as they sailed into Hobart. I just can't believe all those people crammed into the boat, eating, puking, pooping, sleeping for all that length of time in such deep latitudes, surrounded by icebergs with no apparent minor disasters **, sicknesses etc. reported. And was it entirely funded by the Polish businessman? A very expensive hoax, if that's what it is. And as you say, for what purpose? ** Notice too that the serious damage reported occurred in the week prior to April 4 2018 - source https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-04-04/katharsis-2-polish-team-navigate-yacht-around-antarctica/9617094 imagine that happening among the icebergs.

    3. Right you are on immaculte uniforms. In fact, yesterday after dinner and beer, I started wondering why I'm seeing the crew if "different" uniforms on the same voyage. It occurred to me that one way to blow this hoax up is simply to show that they could not possibly have carried as many different "costumes" on board on one mission as pictured. Still to be tested.

Funding by the Polish businessman-- I haven't looked at that yet but funding certainly did occur to me as a problem. At least the Vendee Race hoax has sponsors that are prominently displayed and promoted.

  2. Did it really take 18 months for Yachting World to pick up this, on the face of it, quite extraordinary "first" and danger-filled feat? It never made the English speaking MSM at the time.

I watched the video Around the Ice
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKuCxflDj8Y
and noticed a great contrast between cosy below-deck kitchen scenes as if from a cookery program and above deck feats of survival against the elements. The important, for the story, completion of the circle is at about 37:10.

    1. I've been a deckhand on Arctic Canada Coast Guard vessels & the galley is often neat but gets messy-- the photos on the Katharsis are not "diary" photos but certainly "staged". From my personal experience on work-ships, there should be more chaos seen.

Yachting World should be looked at suspiciously... maybe I'll write them in regard to the delay you cite. I won't expect any real response, just like I never get real responses from cruise ship lines I've emailed about a run around Antarctica for fun.

    2. any of these rags should be suspect, even scientific american tried to insinuate that the Wright brothers were phonies and faked their flights. and the president of poopular mechanics was on nation tv telling us that a steel building collapsed because of a kerosene heater.

    3. I never thought of that one-- the Wright Brothers! Yeah, I'll have to look into that. Thanks for your comment, it brought me back here after a long absence.

Kerosene is presumably jet fuel... and there's more to that story that I'd like to point readers to... if there are any readers anymore besides you. Kerosene temps could not have melted steel girders as you imply but along with that story, I'd like to add that jet fuel-- or kerosene-- cannot possibly be carried in the wings of those aircraft. 9/11 actually exposed a double-hoax!!! You made me think of that just now! That's something I'll explore more in coming days and weeks if I have time. I have a new faster website where I'll pick up on that here...

  3. I didn't notice the date problem although I know the Katharsis II voyage was delayed a year from the original planning. That might account for the date discrepency. I'll double check it. I know what you mean on the below-deck neatness. I've viewed plenty of photos and video from the apparent Antarctic research stations and they're a lot more realistic and messy. The neatness of the Katharsis II below deck is indeed as if staged.

    1. The video shows the Katharsis II's stern hitting big chunks of ice. Are we to believe what we see here? Is it possible that this sail boat can break up ice? I would think that this would be not possible. The camera angle is from high up on the mast. How can this be? If the sailboat is hitting ice chunks and busting them up, would the camera and camera man not be jarred? Even with image stabilization, this seems suspect.

  4. I forgot to mention the "science" being carried out on board by Piotr Kuklinski "who has been researching the Antarctic climate along the way" - it reminded me of the "science" which is supposed to occur on the International Space Station [lol!] We only saw him dangling a bottle into the sea somewhere in a video. He has published, in the past, papers on Antarctic biology but I don't see any connection between him and climate, or any recent work stemming from his "circumnavgation" of the continent. He previously worked at the Natural History Museum in London as an invertibrate specialist....

    1. I think part of his mission is looking for plastic pollution. I found a site that has a way of cleaning it up at https://theoceancleanup.com/. I'll try to email this and ask him if he's following that. After "setting him up" with "friendly co-interests", I'll merge the Antarctica trip into our conversation and see how he responds. He was likely a shill like the rest of them who was paid off to pretend he went around Antarctica. All "academics" are in on this mega hoax-- IMO.

  5. I bet if we look at the Natural History Museums's visiting or in-house researchers, we won't find him. I'll try to look.

    1. There are quite a few pictures of him on twitter - nothing connected with Antarctica. "Diving for bryozoans in Antarctica is frosty work!"

But, see these two videos setting the scene for the 'science' to be carried out on board Katharsis II -

    3. Part II gave us more clues of fakery. I especially like that part where the bouy is going to beam the data up to a satellite. Haha. Satellites... what a joke. My fave site for debunking sats is big-lies.org. I haven't checked it in awhile but will right now. Thanks for the link to this video-- I'll do some screen shots and make a little sub-post on it. I

  6. Kuklinski is introduced at 10:53 in the video "The Crew"

    It's VERY general.

    1. Yeah, general for sure. The other thing is the "flatness" of the emotions sort of like the Apollo 11 astro"nots" in their press interview. Notice too how many of them said the same line "if the captain called me up for another voyage, I'd do it". Nobody dissented. What are the odds of that? Certainly more to be said on this. Thanks.

  9. On the Gleason map 1892, I get one inch = 1,600 miles.  From face of ice wall at 12:00 to face of ice wall at 6:00 it measures 16 inches. So that equals a diameter from wall to wall = 25,600 miles.  This means that on the Gleason map the circumference of the face of the ice wall on flat earth = 80,425 miles.  This is 20,000 more miles than what you calculated.  Is the Gleason map out of scale??

Hi, I'm Captain Rick of the Virtual Circumference Voyage of Antarctica. I intend to prove definitively if Earth is flat or a sphere by paying careful attention to how many miles we cover as we travel "around" Antarctica. Flat earth theory says it's 50-60,000 miles. Spherical Earth theory says it 14,000 miles. Join me and ask any questions that you think would help our mission.
